Broadband is easy to forget when you’re moving — until you’re sitting in your new home with no Wi-Fi. Here’s a simple timeline to avoid that.
3-4 weeks before moving:
- Check broadband coverage at your new address (postcode lookup)
- Compare packages available there — coverage and speeds vary street to street
- Book your install date to align with your move-in date, since lead times can be 5-10+ working days
1-2 weeks before moving:
- Confirm your engineer appointment and any access requirements (e.g. someone needs to be home)
- Give notice to your current provider, timed so service ends around your move-out date
- Update your billing address with your new/existing provider
Moving day:
- Don’t cancel your old service until your new connection is confirmed active, if there’s any overlap possible
- Keep your router (if provided) — some providers ask for it back, others let you keep it
First week in your new home:
- Test your speeds once installed to confirm you’re getting what you’re paying for
- Set up your router in a central location, away from thick walls or metal objects, for the best Wi-Fi coverage
Common mistake to avoid: Assuming your existing provider’s package will simply transfer to your new address — always re-check coverage, since infrastructure differs by location, and you may find better options in your new area.
